Updated: Jan 6

Report on the Life of the Old Catholic Church, Swindon

A Year of Growth and Commitment

Over the past year, the Old Catholic Church in Swindon has continued to function as a stable local eucharistic community. We have maintained regular worship, sacramental ministry, and pastoral care within the limits of our capacity. Our parish remains small but deeply committed, characterised by faithfulness, hospitality, and a strong sense of communal responsibility.

We have experienced significant growth with the establishment of a new ministry team. This development has invigorated our community, allowing us to serve better and reach out to those in need.

Looking Ahead: Priorities for 2026

As we look forward to 2026, our priorities include the continuation of regular Eucharistic celebrations, strengthening communal and pastoral life, and modest opportunities for formation. We are also focused on the careful stewardship of our resources to ensure sustainability. Our community seeks to move forward in a spirit of conciliar discernment, remaining attentive to the guidance of the Holy Spirit and in communion with the wider Old Catholic Church.

Pursuing our own building and implementing our current plans will create numerous opportunities in the future. This aspiration reflects our desire to establish a more permanent spiritual home for our community.

Sustaining Our Sacramental Life

During the past year, we have lived out our vocation as a local eucharistic community within the wider communion of the Old Catholic Church. In faithfulness to the Catholic tradition, we have sought to sustain a stable sacramental life, attentive pastoral care, and a spirit of conciliarity and mutual responsibility.

The regular celebration of the Eucharist remains the foundation and centre of our life and mission. Worship has been offered with consistency, reverence, and pastoral sensitivity. It provides a place of gathering, prayer, and renewal for the faithful.

Engaging in the Sacraments

The celebration of the sacraments has been undertaken with care, attentive to individual pastoral circumstances. Our approach is grounded in the inclusive and conscientious ethos of the Old Catholic Church. Liturgical leadership and preaching have sought to engage the Scriptures and the life of the Church in ways that support faith, reflection, and discipleship.

Building Community Through Fellowship

Although modest in size, our parish continues to function as a genuine community of faith. We are characterised by commitment, hospitality, and mutual care. Informal fellowship associated with worship has contributed to strengthening relationships and fostering a sense of belonging.

We remain open to those seeking an Old Catholic expression of the faith. This includes individuals returning to church life or exploring questions of belief and belonging within a Catholic context that values conscience and shared discernment.

The Heart of Pastoral Ministry

Pastoral ministry remains a central responsibility of our parish. Care has been offered through listening, presence, prayer, and accompaniment, particularly in situations of illness, bereavement, or personal transition. We are conscious of the need to exercise pastoral care in a sustainable and collaborative manner, recognising both the limits and the shared responsibilities inherent in small-community ministry.

Facing Common Challenges

Our parish continues to face challenges common to many local churches, including limited resources and capacity. These realities have encouraged ongoing discernment regarding priorities, sustainability, and the appropriate pace of parish activity.

Rather than focusing solely on numerical growth, we have sought to deepen our common life. We attend to faithfulness, stability, and the quality of relationships within our community.

Pastoral Priorities for 2026

In looking ahead to 2026, we have identified the following priorities:

  • Eucharistic Continuity: Maintaining regular and dignified celebrations of the Eucharist.

  • Communal Life: Strengthening participation, hospitality, and shared responsibility.

  • Pastoral Care: Continuing attentive and compassionate pastoral ministry.

  • Formation: Exploring appropriate opportunities for theological reflection, discussion, and faith formation.

  • Sustainability: Ensuring that parish life is realistic, balanced, and sustainable.

All future developments will be approached prayerfully and in a spirit of conciliar discernment, attentive to the guidance of the Holy Spirit and the pastoral realities of our parish.

A Hopeful Future

The past year has reaffirmed the value of a small but faithful eucharistic community living in communion with the wider Old Catholic Church. As we look toward 2026, we do so with hope grounded in prayer. We trust that continued faithfulness in worship, pastoral care, and communal life will enable us to fulfil our vocation as a local expression of Old Catholic witness in Swindon.

In this journey, we invite everyone to join us in seeking a deeper connection with our faith. Together, we can nurture a spiritual home that resonates with the timeless truths of our Catholic heritage.
