Charity Football Match in Support of Mark's Fight Against Motor Neurone Disease

On Saturday in June 2026, I had the privilege and honour of officiating a Charity Football Match organised to support Mark in his courageous fight against Motor Neurone Disease (MND), I would also like to take this opportunity to express my sincere thanks to Ion Stancu and Fletcher Court for their invaluable assistance as my assistant referees throughout the game. Their support and professionalism were greatly appreciated and helped make the event a success.

Football has always had a unique ability to bring people together, and this event was a perfect example of that. Players, coaches, volunteers, supporters, family members, and friends all united for a common purpose: to raise awareness of Motor Neurone Disease and to show their support for Mark and his family during what is undoubtedly a challenging journey.

From the moment I arrived at the venue, there was a fantastic atmosphere. The sense of community spirit was evident throughout the day, with everyone involved demonstrating kindness, generosity, and a genuine desire to make a positive difference. The event was about much more than football; it was about people coming together to support one of their own and reminding Mark that he is not facing this battle alone.

As the referee, it was inspiring to witness the enthusiasm and sportsmanship displayed by all participants. The players competed with passion and determination while always remembering the true purpose of the occasion. The match was played in an excellent spirit, with respect shown by everyone both on and off the field. Supporters created a wonderful atmosphere, encouraging the players and contributing to a memorable day for all involved.

Motor Neurone Disease is a devastating condition that affects thousands of individuals and their families, and events such as this play a vital role in raising awareness, generating much-needed support, and bringing communities together. The turnout and generosity shown throughout the day were a testament to the impact Mark has had on those around him and the respect and affection people have for him.

I would like to pay tribute to the organisers, volunteers, sponsors, players, and supporters whose hard work and commitment made the event possible. Organising a charity football match requires a tremendous amount of effort behind the scenes, and everyone involved should be incredibly proud of what was achieved. Their dedication helped create a day that not only raised funds but also provided encouragement, hope, and solidarity for Mark and his loved ones.

Personally, I felt privileged to be asked to officiate such an important occasion. Referees are often focused on applying the Laws of the Game and ensuring matches are played fairly, but on this day football served a much greater purpose. It was a reminder of the power of sport to unite communities, support important causes, and bring people together during difficult times.

Most importantly, the day was dedicated to Mark. His courage, resilience, and determination in the face of Motor Neurone Disease continue to inspire those around him. The support shown by everyone present demonstrated just how highly regarded he is within the community.

I would like to thank everyone who attended, donated, participated, volunteered, or contributed in any way to the success of the event. Every contribution, no matter how large or small, helped make a difference.

It was an honour to referee this charity match, and I am proud to have played a small part in such a meaningful and worthwhile occasion. I hope the funds raised and awareness generated will provide valuable support for Mark and his family, and I wish Mark continued strength, courage, and support in his ongoing fight against Motor Neurone Disease.

Football truly showed its best side on Saturday, proving once again that the game is about far more than what happens on the pitch.
