Fr Paris Haines says, “It’s refreshing to see.” - Reform UK Swindon – Listening to the People

It is genuinely refreshing to see politicians actually listening to the people they represent and, more importantly, turning that feedback into action.

The first full council meeting provided a very positive example of what local democracy should look like. Two important motions were brought forward, and both were accepted.

The first was a motion to honour our military heroes — recognising the service, sacrifice and dedication of those who have served our country. This is something I strongly welcome. Our Armed Forces have played, and continue to play, an incredibly important role in protecting our freedoms and our way of life. Their contribution should never be forgotten, and recognising our military heroes is both appropriate and long overdue.

The second motion demonstrated another equally important principle: listening to local residents.

Residents and businesses around Commercial Road have legitimate concerns regarding parking and the impact that parking arrangements can have on the local community. Rather than simply dismissing those concerns, the council has listened to the people who actually live and work in the area.

That is what local politics should be about.

It should not simply be about politicians making decisions from behind closed doors or imposing policies without properly understanding their impact. Local representatives should be listening to residents, understanding their concerns and then doing everything possible to address them.

Seeing both motions accepted at the first full council meeting sends a positive message.

It shows that when politicians genuinely listen, things can happen.

For me, this is where I believe Reform UK Swindon has an important role to play. I believe the people of Swindon want politicians who will listen to them, represent their views and, most importantly, get things done.

Swindon has enormous potential. Our town centre, our communities, our roads, our local services and our economy all deserve proper attention. Residents should feel that their elected representatives are working for them rather than simply talking about issues without delivering meaningful change.

I believe Reform UK can bring a different approach to local politics — one based on listening, accountability and action.

The acceptance of these two motions may seem like a small step, but I believe it represents something much bigger: the voices of ordinary people matter, and politicians should listen to them.

Moving forward, I genuinely believe that Reform UK is the party for Swindon if we want to see things get done.

And looking beyond Swindon, I also believe Reform UK has a significant role to play nationally. In my view, Reform UK should be the party in Parliament that takes the concerns of ordinary people seriously and, ultimately, has the opportunity to govern this country.

Politics should be about serving the people.

It should be about listening.

It should be about delivering.

And, most importantly, it should be about putting the interests of our communities and our country first.

If the first full council meeting is an indication of what can be achieved when politicians listen to the people, then I believe there is a real opportunity for positive change in Swindon.

The people have spoken. Now let's make sure they continue to be heard.
