The assault on Father Mark Paris Haines and Rev Torcato early hours of 14/08/25 stands as a stark example of the dangers faced by community heroes. During this incident, Rev Torcato was attacked by a youth who punched her and then threatened her with a knife. This alarming act of violence has raised serious concerns about safety in our community. It also stresses the urgent need for better protective measures for those who dedicate their lives to serving the vulnerable and the homeless.
Community workers like Father Paris Haines and Rev Torcato play a crucial role in our society. Yet, they often work in environments where risks are part of the job. Now more than ever, we must ensure that these dedicated individuals can carry out their mission safely.
Following this incident, it has become increasingly essential to secure sponsorship for Hi-Viz Jackets to sustain our efforts in supporting the homeless. Furthermore, the church has requested that our volunteers wear stab jackets for their safety. Additionally, radio support is necessary; in 2011, we had the capability to communicate with town security and the police, and it is imperative that this system be reestablished.
Father Paris Haines was initially attacked by the youth, receiving a direct punch to the face. Though shaken, Father Haines attempted to restrain the youth, only to be struck again by another punch.
Rev Torcato was approached without warning by a young assailant who was wearing black and had a facemask on, all 4 of the youths were on pushbikes. The punch she received and the brandishing of the knife left her not only physically shaken but emotionally rattled.
Following the assault on Rev Torcato and Father Paris Haines, Swindon’s community is now stepping up. What has this town come to when 4 youths at 3:30am in the morning can attack members of the Clergy for no reson.
As the Church navigates the aftermath of this incident, it is vital to take steps to enhance safety for community workers.
The incident involving Father Mark Paris Haines and Rev Torcato serves as a wake-up call for the community. By recognizing the risks that community workers face and taking meaningful action, we can cultivate a safer environment for everyone.
Let us unite in solidarity, advocating for the protection of those who work tirelessly for our most vulnerable residents. This incident can be a catalyst for change, and together we can build a brighter future for Swindon.
Dennis Portor-Avis, a church volunteer, was involved in the incident but did not sustain any injuries. However, he is now reflecting on whether his involvement is truly worthwhile.
