Public Statement from The Old Catholic Apostolic Church – Parish of Swindon
For Immediate Release.
The Old Catholic Apostolic Church – Parish of Swindon wishes to address recent alleged public comments attributed to Bishop Elaine Glover concerning homosexuality and religion. These comments, if accurately reported, have caused significant distress and upset among our clergy, our Parochial Church Council (PCC), and the wider parish community.
Our parish strives to be a place of welcome, safety, compassion, and inclusivity for all people, regardless of sexual orientation or any other characteristic. Any expressions—public or private—that are perceived to promote intolerance or hostility stand in direct opposition to the values we uphold.
The PCC will be convening urgently to discuss our collective response, including our future relationship with the wider Church, should such views be permitted to stand without accountability or correction. We must carefully and prayerfully discern whether we can remain affiliated with an institution that appears to tolerate language regarded by many as harmful.
In light of the seriousness of these allegations, we formally call for a full investigation by Church authorities and the temporary suspension of the bishop named, pending the outcome of that investigation. Should no action be taken, we will consider further steps available to us to ensure our parish remains a place free from discrimination and intimidation.
Our parish community reaffirms its commitment to standing against all forms of hate. Public expressions that may constitute hate speech are taken extremely seriously, and we expect all clergy regardless of rank to uphold the highest standards of dignity, respect, and pastoral responsibility.
We ask for prayers for all affected and for wisdom as we navigate this difficult moment.
